ISHS Acta Horticulturae 441: V Temperate Zone Fruit in the Tropics and Subtropics

DETERMINATION OF THE CHILLING DURATIONS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN COASTAL LINE OF TURKEY

Author:   A.B. Küden
Abstract:
The climatic conditions in the Mediterranean coastal line is subtropical and the winters change according to the years. Despite of this fact, temperate zone fruit growing is increasing day by day in all over the coastal area. Low chilling requiring peaches, nectarines, apricots, plums, almonds, pears and apples are grown in the region, however, some problems occur during the very warm winters. Thus, the chilling duration of the main areas of the region should be determined, and the suitable cultivars might be recommended.

A study was carried out to calculate the chilling duration of the main deciduous fruit growing areas in the region during 1990–1996. Içel province gave the lowest chilling accumulation among three provinces during 1993–94 winter period with only 110 chill units. It was followed by Adana (230 CU) and Antakya (338 CU). The estimated hourly temperatures showed some differences from the actual data obtained by thermographs.
