Abstract:
The use of healthy, certified virus-free nursery plants to establish new fruit orchards is one of the most important steps to increase fruit quality and productivity.
Some of the low chilling varieties of peach, nectarin, apricot, and plum are grown extensively in the Mediterranean Region where the climate is subtropical.
The growing area such cultivars has been extending year by year in the region.
At the moment there is no nursery in Turkey that produces certified virus-free, deciduous fruit trees.
The virus status of the plants used to establish new orchards is unknown, but most of the virus diseases are reportedly present in orchards and nurseries.
Recently a new station was established in Karacabey to produce, maintain, and distribute virus-free nursery materials to private and state nurseries.
Biological and serological tests for indexing all known virus and virus-like diseases will be carried out at the station.
