GROWTH AND QUALITY OF TWO GRAPEVINE CULTIVARS AS AFFECTED BY PRUNING SEVERITY

Authors:   A.T. Salem, A.S. Kilani, G.S. Shaker
Abstract:
The response of two grapevine cultivars was studied with respect to different bud load treatments. Pruning treatment of 30 buds/vine as well as 96 buds/vine possessed the highest percentage of vegetation as well as the lowest percentage of fruitful buds for King Ruby and Thompson Seedless respectively. Increasing bud load/vine decreased the current seasons's shoot length and this may be attributed to the competition between the shoots of treatments of high bud load.

As a general conclusion, the yield/vine progressively increased by increasing bud load. However, such correlation is true up to specific limits, since increasing bud load of Thompson Seedless more than 96 buds/vine exhibited an opposite reaction. Generally under the condition of this trial, it could be mentioned that bud load at 30 buds/vine for King Ruby and 72& 96 buds/vine for Thompson Seedless were considered the most optimum for producing higher yield with best physical properties of clusters: Also lighter bud loads (12 or 60 buds/vine) as well as heavier one (108 buds/vine) were not recommended.
