THE EFFECTS OF HARVEST TIME, AND METHOD AND DURATION OF STORAGE ON QUALITY OF ‘HACHIYA’ AND ‘FUYU’ PERSIMMONS

Authors:   M. Pekmezci, M. Erkan, H. Gübbük
Abstract:
The effects of different harvest times and methods of storage on the quality of ‘Hachiya’ and ‘Fuyu’ persimmons grown in Antalya region were investigated. Fruits were harvested at i) end of September or ii) mid-October and divided into three groups. Rockwool material containing KMnO4 was placed into the boxes of first group of fruits to absorb ethylene and the fruits were packed in polyethylene bags. The second group were also packed in polyethylene bags, but without ethylene absorbent. The third group were considered as controls (no bags or KMnO4). All fruit samples were stored at 0°C at 90 % relative humidity. During the storage period, various physical and chemical analyses (weight loss, skin colour, flesh firmness and soluble solids content) were performed. Fungal and physiological disorders were also determined by taking samples at certain intervals. Moreover, the respiration of ‘Hachiya’ and ‘Fuyu’ persimmons were examined. The results showed that, the second harvest time was more suitable than the first, and the polyethylene bag+KMnO4 treatment was effective for both cultivars. Under these conditions, ‘Hachiya’ and ‘Fuyu’ persimmons grown in Antalya region could be successfully stored for 4 months without losing appreciable quality.
