ISHS Acta Horticulturae 441: V Temperate Zone Fruit in the Tropics and Subtropics

EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT PRUNING TREATMENTS ON THE YIELD AND QUALITY OF APRICOTS

Authors:   A. Küden, L. Son
Abstract:
Three years old trees of Precoce de Tyrinthe apricot variety was used in the experiments. Four different pruning dates were investigated: 1) winter pruning in january, 2) july + winter pruning, 3) august + winter pruning and 4) september + winter pruning. Unpruned trees are considered as control.

September + winter pruning treatments caused an earlier flowering (26th of september, 1995) than the others. The latest flowering was obtained from winter pruning treated trees on 3rd of March 1995. Also similar results were determined for the ripening time of the fruits.

Comparing the yield of the treated trees, september + winter pruning treatments gave the highest yield with 3.65 kg/tree and followed by august + winter pruning (3.01 kg/tree) and july + winter pruning (2.93 kg/tree) treatments. Control trees (no pruning) gave the least yield with 2.50 kg/tree.

Pruning treatments increased the fruits size and weight. The biggest sized fruits were obtained from august + winter pruning treatments with 51.75g and followed by winter pruning treated trees (45.03g). Control trees gave the smallest fruits with 41.58g.
