EFFECT OF CHEMICAL THINNING AGENTS ON FRUIT RETENTION AND BUD FORMATION OF STARKSPUR GOLDEN DELICIOUS APPLE

Authors:   M. Burak, M. Büyükyilmaz, F. Öz
Abstract:
This study was conducted at Yalova - Atatürk Central Horticultural Research Institute in order to determine the effect of some chemical agents on fruit thinning and fruit bud formation of Starkspur Golden Delicious apple which shows a tendency toward alternate bearing. Naphthalenacetic acid (NAA) at 10, 20 and 30 ppm, naphthylacetamide (NAD) at 25, 50 and 75 ppm, and NAA at 10 ppm + carbaryl (85%) at 1500 ppm were applied 2 or 3 weeks after full bloom. Hand thinning and no thinning were used as controls. NAA at 10 ppm and NAD at 75 ppm were quite promising for fruit thinning, as well as for increasing the fruit bud formation and thus reducing alternate bearing. NAA at 20 and 30 ppm overthinned but increased fruit bud formation, whereas 25 ppm of NAD had no effect on thinning and only a small effect on flowering. Hand thinning did not affect fruit bud formation.
