ISHS Acta Horticulturae 441: V Temperate Zone Fruit in the Tropics and Subtropics

THE IMPORTANCE OF GERMPLASM EVALUATION OF FRUIT TREES INDIGENOUS IN NEAR EAST

Author:   R. Gülcan
Abstract:
According to the historical background information, olive, grape, date palm, fig and pistachio species can be classified as primary originated where as almond and apricot as secondary originated in the Near-East and Eastern Mediterranean areas. Taking into account the genetic richness of there areas in terms of mentioned tree fruits and nuts, the strong possibility of genetic erosion of the existing valuable gene sources, and crosses involving varieties of quite different geographical origin which are accepted to be the best choice, the characterisation, evaluation, and maintenance of the germplasm present in the collections are of great importance.
