MONITORING OF THE CHANGE IN FRESH WEIGHT OF PLANTS GROWN IN WATER CULTURE

Authors:   M. Takaichi, H. Shimaji, T. Higashide
Keywords:   fresh weight, growth rate, lysimeter, root temperature, tomato
Abstract:
Two types of weighing lysimeter were constructed in order to evaluate the change in fresh weight of a tomato plant in water culture. A lysimeter system of type I, which has two electronic balances and two water communicating pots, could measure the diurnal change in fresh weight, but tended to overestimate water uptakes and fresh weights because of root growth in the solution. The lysimeter system of type II, which consist of two electronic balances and one pot, has drainage and supply devices of nutrient solution. The lysimeter could measure the fresh weight of the plant more directly and also monitor the root volume in the solution. Using the type II lysimeter system, growth responses of tomato plants to the change to high or low root temperature were obtained. The high or low root temperature treatments resulted in the larger diurnal variations of the fresh weight and the root volume.
