UNILATERAL CROSS PROTECTION AMONG SOME NEPO VIRUSES

Author:   R.W. Fulton
Abstract:
Infection by type tomato ringspot virus (TmRSV) protected tobacco against reinfection by cherry leafroll virus (CLRV), which was serologically unrelated, but not against reinfection by tobacco ringspot, raspberry ringspot, Arabis mosaic, or tomato black ring viruses, also serologically unrelated. Cherry leafroll virus infection did not protect against reinfection by TmRSV. An isolate of TmRSV from Clematis failed to protect against four other TmRSV isolates and two of three CLRV isolates. The ability or inability to cross-protect was not correlated with serological reaction.
