Abstract:
Several sources of 'Golden Delicious' with a different virus status were compared with respect to pomological properties.
Some of these sources were free from viruses, others were infected with the so-called latent apple viruses and some with rubbery wood as well.
The virus-free sources showed the strongest growth in the first years, but this resulted mainly in a larger number of laterals.
The first crop was produced by all sources in the second year after planting, the largest yield occurring in the virus-free group.
After four years of production the virus-free sources had the highest yield per unit of growth (kg/cm stem circumference), and also produced the smoothest fruits.
Two of these virus-free sources usually produced smoother fruits than the others.
This may be an example of genetic variation within the variety 'Golden Delicious'.
