ISHS Acta Horticulturae 44: IX International Symposium on Fruit Tree Virus Diseases

A LEAF MOSAIC IN THE RUSSIAN APPLE CLONE R 12 740-7A CONNECTED WITH A STRAIN OF CHERRY NECROTIC RINGSPOT VIRUS

Author:   G. Naumann
Abstract:
From an old plum tree showing leaf symptoms of Sharka virus both Sharka virus and cherry necrotic ringspot virus were isolated. Plants of the apple virus indicator R 12 740-7A inoculated with that virus source revealed a bright yellow-white leaf mosaic. Transmission test to peach seedlings showed that Sharka virus was eliminated by the passage through R 12 740-7A. The virus causing the leaf mosaic was readily transmitted by bud inoculation from infected plants to healthy R 12 740-7A as well as to peach, mazzard, Montmorency, Prunus serotina, myrobalan, Malus platycarpa and Lord Lambourne. While the infection remained latent in the three last named species the other hosts reacted with typical symptoms of cherry necrotic ringspot virus. The virus was also transmitted by leaf sap to cucumber, Chenopodium quinoa, and C. amaranticolor. It reacted with antiserum to cherry necrotic ringspot virus and Danish line pattern virus. According to the results obtained the leaf mosaic in R 12 740-7A is caused by a strain of cherry necrotic ringspot virus.
