ISHS Acta Horticulturae 439: III International Strawberry Symposium

GROWING MEDIA AND PLANT DENSITIES FOR STRAWBERRY TRAY PLANTS

Author:   W.A.G.M. Jansen
Keywords:   Fragaria x ananassa, propagation, stand establishment, cultivation
Abstract:
Soil-borne diseases can cause severe production losses in strawberry culture. Therefore, there is a trend towards using specially grown cuttings and a soilless culture to avoid diseases such as those caused by Verticillium and Phytophthora sp.. Research was carried out to investigate the factors that influence production and fruit quality of plants grown from cuttings. Strawberry cuttings were grown successfully on peat as well as on rockwool in an ebb and flow system. However, plant density turned out to have a great influence on production. On the other hand, size of the cuttings seemed to be of minor importance.
