Abstract:
The results of a comparison with graded frigo plants of 'Elsanta' from six different origins, between 54 and 39 degrees of latitude are presented.
Five-hundred plants of each origin were graded into 12/15, 15/18 and >18 mm crown diameter and stored at -1.5°C until planting.
One-hundred plants of 15/18 mm were planted in January and July in the glasshouse and the rest during May in the field.
The grading results showed a great variation between the origin and the year of propagation, also a positive correlation between crown diameter and yield.
Large differences in yield and fruit size were found between the origins of plant material.
Between the years the productivity and ranking of the different origins varied considerably.
No effect of latitude was observed.
The comparison of the three planting dates showed no influence on the number of flower clusters but losses in yield during May of about 20–30% and in July of about 55% occurred, which was mainly due to the reduced fruit size.
In July, however, the number of flowers was reduced.
