Abstract:
Genetic variance components, heritability and the genetic gain for four characters were investigated in 32 progenies produced by using 11 European and 3 North American strawberry cvs. and clones under a factorial crossing scheme.
The estimation of the genetic variance components have shown that for all the four traits, the additive variance component was approximately 50% of the genetic variance.
Correlated with that, heritability estimates were high, and ranged from 0.680 for fruit weight to 0.542 for firmness.
If the best families were selected, a genetic gain ranging from 8% to 26% (compared to hybrid mean), from 3% to 19% (compared to female parents mean), and from 5% to 18% (compared to male parents mean), could be achieved.
