STRAWBERRY GROWING IN THE ARABIAN GULF

Author:   F. Dénes
Keywords:   Fragaria x ananassa, cultivation, high temperature
Abstract:
Strawberry growing is a very risky business under extreme environmental conditions. The weather conditions in the Arabian Gulf are not suitable for the cultivation of short-day or June-bearing strawberry cultivars. The summer is long and very hot with daily temperatures as high as 40 to 45°C, thus preventing the outdoor cultivation of strawberries. Growing plants originating from temperate zones can only be successful during the winter period.

The temperature in the Gulf starts to decrease in the second half of October, thus allowing the growth of strawberry plants. This period lasts till the end of February after which the minimum and maximum temperatures rise continuously. It is favourable that the temperature never sinks below zero, which is why the flowers are not exposed to frost.
