Abstract:
A network of 17 experimental sites across 12 Western European countries has been set up to evaluate yield potential, plant quality and pedo-climatic adaptibility of newly released strawberry cultivars.
The scheme has been running, on a voluntary basis, since 1994, with initial funding to develop the network from the EC-Air 1992–95 program.
Cultivars are grown using cultural methods most appropriate to the country involved, but using a standardised protocol for evaluation and data collection.
In addition to conventional statistical analytical methods, a multicriteria decision aid (ELECTRE IV) is used for some qualitive parameters.
The network enables objective information to be rapidly passed back to growers and breeders.
