Abstract:
The Norwegian strawberry industry has expanded by more than 20% over the last five years.
The fresh fruit market is the most important and less than 25% of the production goes for processing.
The main cultivars are Senga Sengana, Korona and Bounty.
Senga Sengana has been the dominant cultivar during the last thirty years, but its importance is now decreasing. 'Korona' is becoming less important while 'Bounty' has contributed about 20% of the production during the last ten years.
The last cultivar introduced to the Norwegian strawberry industry is 'Elsanta'. From our own breeding program we have the cultivars 'Glima' and 'Jonsok'. They are both early cultivars of good quality both for the fresh fruit market and for processing, but the fruits are a little too small.
The Danish cultivar Zephyr is also grown as an early cultivar, but lack of quality and resistance to powdery mildew (Sphaerotheca macularis) makes it less valuable. 'Elsanta' has survived the Norwegian winters fairly well in years when the plants have been covered by snow.
In other years the winter damage may be severe.
In the evaluation program we are evaluating new cultivars and advanced selections from our own breeding program and from several breeding programs in Europe, Canada and USA. We are evaluating for high yielding cultivars with good taste and aroma, high resistance to as many pests and diseases as possible, firm, big fruits, good shelf life and good winter hardiness.
