Abstract:
The public strawberry breeding programme in Spain involves two areas, Huelva and Valencia.
Our main purposes are to breed cultivars for high yielding capacity, earliness, easy to pick, large fruit size for fresh-market and high quality of fruits.
The results in 1994–95 led us to choose one advanced selection (RB-19) as a new short-day cultivar registered as Calderona.
The production of 'Calderona' was higher than that of all the controls ('Seascape', 'Vilanova', 'Oso Grande', 'Camarosa' and 'Chandler') in 1995 and similar to that of 'Camarosa' in the first part of the season in 1996. Its performance and characteristics are described.
