Abstract:
In 1988 nine Italian Institutions started a strawberry breeding programme for the south of Italy.
The seedlings and selections were observed at three southern locations (Metaponto, Battipaglia and Marsala). The project released three cultivars (Clea, Egla and Teodora) in 1994. Particularly 'Clea', compared with the check cultivars, performed well both as frigo and fresh transplants.
Among the selections, 89.384.6 (‘Marmolada’ x ‘Irvine’), 91.312.2 (‘Oso Grande’ x 86.51.13) and 91.201.5 (‘Irvine’ x 86.51.13) were the most interesting and are being intensively propagated in the nursery.
