Abstract:
Since 1994 HRI East Malling has released three new cultivars and a fourth is scheduled for 1996.
'Eros' is a mid-season short-day type.
The appearance and shelf-life of the fruit is very similar to 'Elsanta' but berries are slightly larger. 'Eros' has partial resistance to Phytophthora fragariae and is less susceptible to Verticillium dahliae and Sphaerotheca macularis than 'Elsanta'. In UK trials the yield has been similar to 'Elsanta'. 'Eros' is well suited to the 60-day production system and to substrate culture.
'Tango' is a strong day-neutral with attractive orange/red berries which are moderately firm with a glossy skin. 'Tango' is very productive and has consistently been the earliest day-neutral in trials since 1988. The compact plants produce few runners and are moderately resistant to V. dahliae but susceptible to S. macularis.
'Emily' is a short-day cultivar which flowers and fruits 5 to 10 days before 'Honeoye'. Yields from trials at East Malling have consistently been higher than 'Honeoye'. The berries are firm with a regular shape and similar colour to 'Honeoye' but smaller average size.
Plants are resistant to S. macularis but susceptible to V. dahliae.
'Bolero' is a mid-season day-neutral which has been very productive in trials at East Malling.
The berries are firm with good flavour and colour, regular shape, glossy skin and good shelf-life.
Plants are moderately vigorous, resistant to S. macularis and moderately resistant to V. dahliae and Phytophthora cactorum.
