ISHS Acta Horticulturae 439: III International Strawberry Symposium

SJ89264–6 AND SJ8976–1 TWO STRAWBERRY SELECTIONS WITH LONG STORAGE-LIFE

Authors:   S. Khanizadeh, D. Buszard
Keywords:   cultivar description
Abstract:
SJ89264-6 and SJ8976–1 are two new hardy strawberry selections with large fruit size, excellent flavour, resistance to fruit rot, long storage life and yield comparable to 'Honeoye', 'Kent', 'Chambly' and 'Bounty'. The pale fruit colour of SJ8976–1 and SJ89264–6 in combination with firmness, resistance to fruit rot and long shelf life make them good candidates for fresh market and transportation. Leaf disease susceptibility of these two selections is similar to 'Kent'. The plants of these two selections are vigorous with light green foliage. Both selections ripen after 'Glooscap' and are probably not suitable for pick-your-own due to their pale colour at maturity. The fruit colour of both selections darkens during storage. These two selections were evaluated in four sites and in vitro against leaf spot, scorch and red stele.
