PHYTOPATHOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF STRAWBERRY BREEDING FOR RESISTANCE TO VERTICILLIUM WILT

Author:   G.F. Govorova
Keywords:   Fragaria x ananassa, disease resistance, Verticillium
Abstract:
Adaptation and resistance to the major diseases, and yield and quality are the main indices for breeding and long life of a commercial strawberry cultivar. Verticillium wilt is one of the most wide-spread and destructive diseases of strawberry and occurs practically in all zones of commercial strawberry production. The pathogen survives under extreme conditions for several years. A combination of broad and race-specific specialisation in strawberry and lack of effective and unexpensive fungicides stipulates a principal role of sanitary, preventive, and breeding methods in Verticillium wilt control based on ecological and economical advisability.
