Abstract:
Three strawberry cultivars (Annapolis, Honeoye, and Sparkle) and seven advanced selections (SJ89288-2 ‘Joliette’, SJ89700-1, SJ8976-1, SJ89264-6, SJ8916-1, SJ8916-50, and SJ83OR-2) from the Quebec breeding program were evaluated in a controlled environment for their susceptibility to the six North American Eastern (NAE) races of Phytophthora fragariae (A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, and A6). No red-steles or oospores were observed in control plants. ‘Anapolis’ and SJ89288-2 were the most resistant genotypes compared to the others. ‘Honeoye’, SJ89264-6, SJ89700-1, SJ83OR-2, SJ8916-1, and SJ8976-1 were the most susceptible genotypes and had the highest frequency of red-stele and presence of oospores in their root segments whereas SJ8916-50 and ‘Sparkle’ were partially resistant.
These selections are presently under evaluation at different sites for final evaluation.
A small number of plants of each selection is available for research purposes and can be obtained by written request to the author (SK).
