BREEDING STRAWBERRIES (FRAGARIA X ANANASSA DUCH.) FROM SEED

Abstract:
In 1976 a breeding programme was started in strawberries aimed at developing cultivars to be propagated by seed. At first the diploid species Fragaria vesca L. (2n=14) was investigated. The genetic variation in fruit size and other relevant characteristics was too narrow to have any perspective for seed propagated cultivars for the professional grower. The octoploid species Fragaria x ananassa Duch. (2n=56) showed more promise of genetic variation. During the following years of experimental inbreeding it became apparent that a sufficient level of uniformity within parent lines was feasible. Experimental F1-hybrids also showed a high level of uniformity.

Currently the F1-hybrids are all day-neutral: they do not need a short-day, nor a cold treatment. Depending on the time of year and climatic conditions in the nursery, the F1-hybrids bear fruit 16 – 26 weeks after sowing. These features make the concept of seed-propagated F1-hybrids an attractive product for professional growing in greenhouses and open-air culture.
