Abstract:
The need of cultivars adapted to northern climatic conditions is a major problem in the strawberry production in Finland.
Therefore, at the Institute of Horticulture, both clones bred in our Institute and foreign cultivars are being tested in order to fill in the cultivar gap.
Winterhardiness is one of the most important characteristics desired.
In the clone trial, 126 selections are being tested.
These clones were selected from the crossing material produced in 1991. The most promising parentages of the clones currently being tested are 'Hiku', 'Heino', 'Elvira', 'Bounty' and 'Hella', based on several characteristics, especially winterhardiness.
In 1993–1994, 23 foreign cultivars were planted in preliminary trials.
The primary goal of these trials is to find good candidates for larger-scale trials.
In the first preliminary trial the most promising cultivars were 'Bogota', 'Elsanta', 'Korona', 'Polka' and 'Venta'.
