| Abstract:
Since 1993, three public strawberry breeding programmes have been included in the national project “Frutticoltura” financially supported by the Ministry of Agriculture (MIRAAF). The programmes aim to obtain dessert strawberry cultivars adapted to the different environmental conditions in the Po Valley, Southern and mountain areas to be planted annually on raised beds in the open field or in plastic walk-in tunnels. The best results obtained by the breeding activity carried out in Cesena areas are reported. Significant gains have been obtained in yield (+38%), in average berry weight (+68%) and berry firmness (+13%) over the period 1975–1995. | |
