Abstract:
In 1992/93, 24 institutes from 16 European countries, including Russia, collaborated in order to set up a general inventory of 900 old and recent strawberry cultivars.
The european working group (11 specialists from 8 western european countries) has chosen 112 old cultivars of genetic interest to preserve.
The germplasm collection is maintained on a voluntary basis, 20 to 30 cultivars being held at two different locations by each of 13 of the Institutes in western Europe.
Both in vitro and in vivo methods of preservation are used.
A descriptive catalogue which includes the primary passport and secondary characters of each cultivar is presently being edited.
The distribution of the preserved material is free for breeders or botanical gardens.
The long-term preservation of germplasm by cryopreservation of meristems is foreseen as a necessary development for the continuity of the programme.
This work has been carried out by the european working group during the past 3 years and is a first step to using strawberry genetic resources in breeding programmes.
