Abstract:
The agronomy and food marketing department of the agriculture and forestry ministry in Sicily, planned and coordinated the first project to promote and research into consumers in a sample group of restaurants in a medium-high target-group in the center and north of Italy.
This project represents the first in a series, to promote cactus pear in the catering industry and in organized trade.
The project's main aim is to study the opportunities present in order to enter into the central and northern Italian market where cactus pear is not usually found.
An initial step towards this (aim) could be found in the quantitative-qualitative research elaborated by the agricultural and food marketing department, initiated by questionnaires that were distributed at the same time as promotion was carried out in the second half of November last year.
From this research the following information was taken:
- the degree of familiarity with cactus pear;
- frequency, methods and selling outlets;
- perception of the tastes and characteristic of the fruit;
- the limiting factors in buying cactus pear.
A second aim of the work is to provide, through the analysis of the results from the research the conditions necessary for public and private Sicilian cactus pear commercial companies, who want more information on the market, to develop marketing strategies.
