ISHS Acta Horticulturae 437: VII International Symposium on Pollination

POLLINATION AND FERTILIZATION OF APPLE CULTIVARS IN HUNGARY

Author:   M. Soltész
Keywords:   auto-fertility, autogamy, cross-pollination, incompatible combination, parthenocarpy
Abstract:
We examined the role of auto-fertility and parthenocarpy in fruit set of 292 apple cultivars under Hungarian conditions. The tendency for self-fertilization is a cultivar characteristic affected by age of tree and weather in a given year. Not a single cultivar can provide satisfactory fruit set by self-fertilization; however, even fruit set of 1–3% via self-fertilization plays an important role in increasing the productivity and assuredness of a crop. We have found not a single cultivar which would have assured a comparative fruit set through autogamy each year, but fruit set via autogamy appeared in most years in some cultivars (e.g. Golden Delicious, Jonagold, Jonathan, Idared). The fertility relationship of cultivars improved in Hungary and the occurrence of parthenocarpy were established through studies on cross-pollinations; the cultivar combinations becoming satisfactorily fertile, with special attention to bloom time and the relationship to other cultivars.
