POLLINATION OF RED MANGROVE, RHIZOPHORA MANGLE, IN NORTHERN BRAZIL. |

| Abstract:
Red mangrove, Rhizophora mangle, is the dominant species in northern Brazil. We propose to determine the type of pollination and the possible pollen vectors on R. mangle. In 1995, in mangroves of the Carcinoculture Station of Sagri, Curuçá, Pará, Brazil, we compared two groups of flowers: a control group in which buds were isolated under nets, and a second group in which buds were exposed to all possible pollen vectors. Results appear to indicate that pollination is favored by various pollen vectors since, in the first group, fruit set is 0.64%, whereas in the second it is 2.46%. To determine if R. mangle reproduces by cross-pollination or self-pollination, two other groups of buds were isolated, identified and manually pollinated: the first by self-pollination and the second by cross-pollination (without emasculation). Reproduction of R. mangle appears to be favored by self-pollination but cross-pollination is not excluded. R. mangle appears to be pollinated by the wind. | |
