ISHS Acta Horticulturae 437: VII International Symposium on Pollination

HONEY BEES AND THE PRODUCTION OF CUCUMBERS IN QUEBEC (CANADA)

Authors:   D. Gingras, D. de Oliveira, J. Gingras
Abstract:
Cucumbers are cultivated in all Canadian provinces, and Québec and Ontario have the largest area devoted to culture of this vegetable. The objectives of this study were to determine the insect species that visit the flowers, as well as their contribution to pollination and production of cucumbers. In Oka (Québec), plants within two plots were covered to exclude visits from pollinators to the flowers. Plants within two other plots were not covered, allowing pollinators to visit the flowers in these plots. Honey bees, Apis mellifera L. were almost the only pollinator to visit flowers in the open pollinated plots. Fruits were produced from all plots, but plots that were open pollinated produced significantly more fruits with superior weight and pollination rates.
