ISHS Acta Horticulturae 437: VII International Symposium on Pollination

THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE INFLORESCENCE AND ITS POLLINATION AND FRUIT SET IN PEARS

Author:   E. Dibuz
Keywords:   anthesis, duration of bloom, inflorescence, side-inflorescence, succession order of bloom
Abstract:
We examined the construction of the inflorescence of 77 pear cultivars between 1984 and 1991, in relation to bloom, pollination and fruit set. The centripetal succession order of bloom in the inflorescences is characteristic of 59% of the cultivars. In one-fourth of the cultivars a centrifugal order was found. Divergent forms are also frequent and formed the remaining proportion.

There is a close relationship between the succession order of bloom and the number of the flowers on one inflorescence, and also between the duration of bloom and fruit set. The appearance of side-inflorescences can only be expected in inflorescences with centripetal and divergent anthesis.
