ISHS Acta Horticulturae 437: VII International Symposium on Pollination

CROSS - INCOMPATIBILITY IN STONE FRUITS

Authors:   J. Nyéki, Z. Szabó
Abstract:
Examinations were conducted on 93 cultivars of 6 stone fruit species in 340 combinations during 1968 – 1991. In 62.9% and 53.5% of cross combinations fruit set did not exceed 5% and 1%, respectively. In sour cherry and apricot the aim of the crosses was to determine the degree of incompatibility. It is the tendentious choice of pollination partners that resulted in the high rate of incompatible combinations. The frequent occurrence of cross-incompatibility in sweet cherry and Japanese-type plums is a characteristic of these species.
