GRAFT-UNION BEHAVIOR OF PERSIMMON CULTIVAR ‘FUYU’ ON DATE PLUM STOCK

Abstract:
Comparative anatomical studies of persimmon cultivar ‘Fuyu’ as scion on Date Plum (Diospyros lotus) as seedling rootstocks showed visible differences between the components in shape of cells and some cell contents. The layer of pericyclic fiber in cortex was found in ‘Fuyu’ but not in Date Plum.

The development of graft union at 2-days intervals for 1 months was studied. Callus formation began 3 days and completed at 5 days after grafting. The tissues were proliferated from the stock more than the scion. In rootstock, the callus tissue was proliferated from cells in the area of cortex, phloem tissue and xylem tissue (especially that adjacent to cambium), cambium and pith. The area of callus proliferation in scion was the same as that found in stock but was notably slower than in the stock. Cambium bridge formation began 7 days and completed at 9 days after grafting. Complete connection of vascular tissue was shown within 15 days after grafting.

The experiment was conducted at Royal Pangda Station, Samoeng District, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand.
