Abstract:
One-year-old trees of cvs.
Tonewase, Nishimurawase and Shinsyu were planted in beds made of wooden frame of 60 cm wide, 30 cm high and 40 m long.
Beds were set 2.2 m apart and tree distance was 1 m within a row (4550 trees/ha) and trees were trained to central leader along 1.8 m high trellis.
Bottoms of the beds were separated with layers of plastic film and urethane sheet from the ground.
Three years after planting, wooden frames of the beds were removed and some soil was mounded to the sides of the beds.
Final bed volume per tree was about 180 liters.
Early cropping with considerable amount of yield was obtained from the third year after planting.
Mulching the bed outside surface with aluminized plastic sheet enhanced fruit coloration and increased total soluble solids content of fruit.
This system would be more advantageous than the conventional central-leader training system in terms of early cropping with good fruit quality and light work for elderly growers.
