ARE GIBBERELLINS INVOLVED IN TEMPERATURE-MEDIATED STEM EXTENSION RESPONSES IN TOMATO?

Abstract:
Preliminary experiments have been carried out using tomato to determine whether the well documented, stem-extension response to the temperature difference (DIF) between day and night involves effects on the metabolism of gibberellins, or changes in the sensitivity of tissue to gibberellins. When exogenous gibberellins were applied to mutants deficient in gibberellin there was no difference in extension growth response in three contrasting DIF regimes having the same 24-hour average temperature. This indicates that tissue sensitivity was not affected and that DIF effects are more likely to be a consequence of changes in gibberellin metabolism. Preliminary analysis of gibberellins in wild type plants indicated a reduction in GA19 and GA20 when grown in a -DIF regime (day temperature lower than the night temperature).
