Abstract:
Longitudinal sections were taken sixteen weeks after full bloom from both the “on” and “off” spurs of alternate bearing 'Red Spur' and 'Golden Delicious' apples.
The results showed that the procambial cone in the “off” bud was centrally situated beneath the apical meristem, whereas in the “on” bud it extended into the apical dome and connected to the vascular bundle of the spur.
Vascular bundles directed toward the fruit were distinctively more differentiated and dominant than those directed towards a vegetative bud on the same “on” spurs.
It was concluded that the sink-source relationship in “on” spurs, regulated possibly by plant hormones, play the main role in the alternate bearing of apple trees.
