THE POTENTIAL OF HYBRID BREEDING FOR TOLERANCE TO SUB OPTIMUM COLD TEMPERATURES IN MELONS

Authors:   S. Mendlinger, Y. Ventura, P. Amuyunzu
Abstract:
In a program for understanding the response of melons to sub-optimum cold temperatures, we examined the potential of hybrid breeding for producing more tolerant cultivars. Seven cold tolerant open pollinated cultivars and six hybrid cultivars produced from them were screened for an array of vegetative, reproductive, appearance and quality traits. The hybrid cultivars proved to be more tolerant or produce an economically more favorable fruit than the open pollinated cultivars. Overall, a hybrid breeding program can be used to improve tolerance to suboptimum cold temperatures.
