VARIABLES WHICH INFLUENCE THE OCCURENCE OF BACK MOULD (ASPERGILLUS NIGER) ON ONION BULB IN THE RIO NEGRO VALLEY.

Authors:   A. van Konijnenburg, M.C. Pozzo Ardizzi

Abstract:
The occurrence of black mould (Aspergillus niger) is the main cause of the discard of stored onions bulbs.

The objective of this essay was to analyze environment variables, including patterns of crops management and their relations to the different levels of disease incidence and severity.

Different crops were subjected to regular observations, during two growing seasons (1991/1992 and 1992/1993). The recorded variables were: 1. plot characteristics; 2. crop characteristics and management; 3. post-harvest handling of the product and 4. disease indices measured as: incidence and severity. At the end of storage, disease incidence was related to the following variables: previous crop, drying time previous to storage, and the percentage of diseased bulbs at harvest.

These relations lead to the following conclusion: there are some crop managing patterns which could modify the incidence of the disease.
