BREEDING F, HYBRIDS TO IMPROVE UNIFORMITY IN LEEKS (ALLIUM AMPELOPRASUM SSP. PORRUM)

Authors:   B.M. Smith, T.C. Crowther
Keywords:   Leek, F1 hybrid, Male sterility, Allium ampeloprasum ssp porrum
Abstract:
All current commercial cultivars of leeks are open pollinated and one of the major problems with the crop is poor uniformity with much of the variation being genetic in origin. The breeding system is more complex than onion and up to the present no commercial hybrids have been developed. A breeding line with stable male sterility, a high rate of vegetative multiplication, and the ability to produce highly uniform and productive hybrids, has now been developed and will be used as the basis for a range of commercial hybrids. Performance data are presented for uniformity, yield and quality, together with a discussion of the commercial viability of the seed production system.
