Abstract:
One of the activities of the Technical Cooperation Network on Food Crops of the FAO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean is the coordination of regional cultivar trials. These trials have the objective to stimulate the exchange of interesting breeding material and released cultivars between research programmes in the region. Recently a short-day onion cultivar trial was initiated. Before designing the trial a questionnaire was sent to potential participants. The results of the questionnaire not only give insight in cultivar trial designs used in Latin America and the Caribbean, but also in constraints in onion production, cultivars and research objectives in the region. The results of the questionnaire and the organisation of the trial are presented in this paper.
