PRODUCTIVE ADAPTATION OF ONION (ALLIUM CEPA L.) LANDRACES USED FOR POST-HARVEST STORAGE

Authors:   G. Galván, H. González Idiarte, S. Sollier
Abstract:
Onion landraces grown in Uruguay present diversity in the time of bulbing. Through this work productive adaptation was assayed for second-early (intermediate-day) and late (long-day) landraces. These had showed high post-harvest storage potential. Ten trials were carried out during 4 years (1989–92), without irrigation, and the S. Valenciana EELB (from Valcatorce INTA) was included as control in 5 cases. Second early landraces presented time of bulbing in October-November period and time of harvest in December. Some of these showed best yield than control cv. and other landrace groups used for storage. However, yielding depression as a result of late sowing is high. Some of these landraces also presented best post-harvest storage, influenced by the lowest rot losses. Late groups valenciane landraces, showed time of bulbing and harvest similar than control cv., and high post-harvest storage for specific populations. Some of these landraces adaptation as yield and post-harvest ability, is important to the future breeding in Uruguay.
