THE RICHNESS OF GENETIC PLASM GARLIC (ALLIUM SATIVUM L.) IN BULGARIA

Author:   S. Datshvarov
Abstract:
There is a prominent richness of genetic plasm from non-bolting garlic (A. sativum L.) in Bulgaria, and especially as far as the early garlic is concerned. A relatively rich collection of local populations and biotypes has been made together with a few efforts for its description and systematization. Because of the lack of preservation conditions, its maintenance and exchange have been difficult.

Several breeding programmes have been worked out in our country during the last decades and as a result the new cultivars have been made: "Whit June N 20", "Nora", "Zahorsci", etc. The most stable results have been achieved by the new cultivar "Zdravets" a cultivar-clon. it belong to the biotype of high-garlic with a central sterile leaf. After a successful state testing of the sort it has been determined to be grown up throughout the whole country and the production of planting material has been organized. Some new breeding programmes have been under way and their characteristics are being improved as stated in the summary. The maintenance of the already selected cultivars is a very important item in the production of planting material. But it has been unstable recently, because of some financial obstacles and irregular search and sale of planting material.

The describing of the genetic richness and its preservation for future use and exchange is a very important task for us.
