FAMOUS GARLICS NATIVE TO CHINA: ITS PROBLEMS AND STRATEGIES

Authors:   W. Xinhua, D. Wufeng
Abstract:
China has stretches of land geologically where climatic conditions vary greatly. Considerable garlic germplasm exists in China and many famous local garlics evolved as a result of long-term natural and artificial selections under various ecological environments: Aching garlic in Heilongjiang, Changshan garlic in Shandong, Yingxian garlic in Shanxi, Taichang garlic in Jiangsu, Chucheng garlic in Anhui, Jiading garlic in Shanghai, Shanggao garlic in Jiangxi and Chuanxi garlic in Sichuan, etc. Today large amounts of garlic are exported to European and American countries, eastern Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan. For instance total garlic yield of China ranks first all over the world. Eiading garlic amounts to one fifth of the exported garlic and enjoys a famous reputation in the international markets. However, degenerations occurred of these famous local garlics: bulb yield decreased, the size of bulbs became smaller and large numbers of onecloved bulbs emerged. Reasons for the deteriorations are complicated: first, little attention was paid to selection and breeding during cultivation practices for long periods of time and as a result populations got mixed up; another was the sale of high-quality garlics and hence only the low-quality ones were left for next year production as a result of short-sightedness of the growers. Furthermore, the infection of virus of endless variety and occurrence of secondary growth aggravated the situation. Therefore, it is imperative to develop virus-free garlic and inhibit secondary growth in garlic plants.
