Abstract:
We have transferred the nucleocapsid protein gene of the lettuce isolate of tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV-BL) into a tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) resistant tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) line, (Geneva 80), via Agrobacterium tumefaciens.
Kanamycin-resistant transgenic R0 lines were selfed and their progenies were resistant to the homologous TSWV-BL isolate.
Transgenic R1 plants were also tested for their ability to resist infections by other tospoviruses.
In addition, R2 lines were obtained from TSWV-BL-resistant R1 plants.
One of these lines was crossed with a cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) resistant transgenic Geneva 80 line that is homozygous for the coat protein gene of CMV. Their progenies were resistant to TSWV and CMV.
