OVERCOMING INTERSPECIFIC HYBRIDIZATION BARRIER IN ORNITHOGALUM BY APPLICATION OF NAA TO THE OVARY

Authors:   H. Ge, R. Shillo, S. Wenkart, D. Mills, J. Chen
Abstract:
Interspecific hybridization in Ornithogalum was hampered by incompatibility between species. In some cases, ovaries started to grow but within 7–14 days, turned yellow and died. In crosses between O. ‘Nova’ and O. dubium, we tried to overcome this drawback by applying growth regulators in lanolin paste to the ovary surface. Of the regulators tested, NAA induced growth of fertile and non-fertile ovaries and eliminated their senescence. Furthermore, the percentage of fertile ovaries was dramatically increased. In addition, ovary and ovule culture were successful and seeds from treated ovaries were significantly more viable than controls.
