ISHS Acta Horticulturae 430: VII International Symposium on Flowerbulbs

BREEDING FOR LATE FLOWERING IN ASIATIC LILIES

Author:   K. Mynett
Abstract:
Not enough attention has been paid to the late flowering Asiatic Lily cultivars and to how to extent the flowering season of lilies in the garden. To meet the cut flower demand in the late summer period from the open, a special breeding program was entertained in the Research Institute of Pomology and Floriculture in Skierniewice. The late flowering species - Lilium leichtlinii var.maximowiczii, Lilium tigrinum var.diploid and Lilium wilsonii were crossed reciprocally and also with the a very late cultivar from our collection - 'Yellow Blaze'.

All the results concerning genetic characteristics and ornamental value of the obtained progennitures are described here.

We have found that flowering time of Asiatic Lilies has a true genetic basis. In the first generation (F1), the segregation of this character was shown to be a completely dominant effect. Three of the best late flowering clones, derived from interspecific and intercultivar crosses, have been submitted as new cultivars to the Polish Register of Cultivars.
