ISHS Acta Horticulturae 430: VII International Symposium on Flowerbulbs

EFFECT OF SEVERAL PRESERVATIVE SOLUTIONS ON LONGEVITY AND MICROORGANISMS OF CUT LILIUM SPECIES

Authors:   J.K. Suh, J.H. Kim
Abstract:
The influence of microorganism growth on the vase life of cut Lilium flowers, the main microbial species which affect vase life and the effect of different components of cut flower preservative solutions on microbial growth were studied with the objective of developing effective preservative solutions.

An increase in the number of microorganisms in stems and holding solutions shortened the vase life of cut lily flowers. Pseudomonas and Erwinia species most commonly affected vase life of cut lily flowers amongst the 11 microorganisms species isolated from stem tissue of cut lily. Silver nitrate, aluminum sulfate and 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate were very effective in inhibiting the growth of microorganisms, and the lower effectiveness of silver thiosulfate is thought to be due to the precipitation of silver thiosulfate. Among the microbial species, Pseudomonas fluorescence was most resistant to the inhibitory effect of the chemicals.
