Abstract:
The regulation of carbohydrate partitioning in tulip bulbs was studied in detail.
When tulip bulbs are properly precooled a massive carbohydrate flow from the scales towards the elongating stalk takes place.
The genes for several proteins that were found to play an active role in this process were cloned and analysed.
The regulation of these genes was studied using an in vitro system for internode elongation.
It was found that during the cooling period the sensitivity for auxin in the internodes changed considerably and this effect was even more striking in the presence of gibberellic acid.
