ISHS Acta Horticulturae 430: VII International Symposium on Flowerbulbs

FREEZING NON-VERNALIZED ASIATIC LILY BULBS FOLLOWED BY FLOWER INDUCTION/INITIATION

Authors:   J.F. Tammen, O.B. Nissen
Keywords:   Lilium, Lilium x elegans, cool temperature units, quantification, vernalization
Abstract:
Non-vernalized Asiatic lily bulbs (Lilium x elegans Thunb.) were successfully frozen and stored at -1.0°C for up to 12 wks. without a subsequent loss of quality when flowering was induced and the bulbs were forced, as measured by the percentage of bulbs which flowered, days to flower, the number of flowers per stem and stem length. The value of these results is discussed as it relates to the year around availability of high quality, pathogen-indexed Asiatic lily bulbs. (U.S. Patent No. 5,058,318).
